Crises in the Middle East: Canadian Church leaders write to the Prime Minister
The leaders of all the 24 member Churches of the
Canadian Council of Churches (CCC), including the Most Reverend Richard Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton and President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), have signed a joint letter to the Right Honourable Stephen Harper about the ongoing crises in the Middle East.

Pope Francis: True power is serving others
Real power in the Church is service, and Christ taught us that to make progress, to move forward we must first humble ourselves and put ourselves at the service of others. This was the focus of Pope Francis's homily at morning Mass. Reflecting on the readings of the day, the Pope said real power is service. Like Jesus who "came not to be served but to serve, and His service was the service of the Cross. He humbled Himself unto death, even death on a cross for us, to serve us, to save us". Pope Francis said: "there is no other way in the Church to move forward. For the Christian, getting ahead, progress, means humbling oneself.

New National Director appointed for Pontifical Mission Societies
The Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, following a consultation with the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, has appointed Father Alex Osei, C.S.Sp., as Director of the Canadian English Sector of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS). He succeeds Mr. Robert Gutcher, who was Interim Director after the former PMS Director, Mrs. Marie Deans, had been obliged to discontinue work in 2012 because of serious illness. Since November 2008, Father Osei was director of Brottier House Spiritan Refugee Centre in Toronto.
